Existing Denture - Immediate Addition

Please use this guide to help you understand the concepts, considerations, processes and expectations of your immediate addition. Traditionally after getting your teeth extracted you would have to wait 2-3 months or longer for your bone and gum to heal before making a new denture or adding to your existing denture. During this time you will have missing teeth from your smile, will have difficulties eating, your tongue will overgrow, and your existing denture will be uncomfortable which could create future issues when constructing a new denture. The concept of an immediate addition enables immediate restoration of your smile and eating ability after tooth extraction, aiding in the healing process without waiting for bone and gum healing while also maintaining the tongue space.

However, it's important to understand some considerations that will occur during this process. The immediate addition fitment isn't the same as a new permanent denture set. Therefore it can slip, move, and can be uncomfortable. Although your gum and bone will heal it will also shrink after an extraction, this will last anywhere from 2-3 months or longer. As a result, you may experience soreness, irritation, and loose fitting dentures. This can be a difficult time for you however, at DK Dental Studio we have a treatment to help ease the difficulty that comes from extracted teeth and immediate addition.

The process of our treatment plan goes as follows:

Book an appointment with your dentist to examine your oral health. Your dentist will identify which teeth require extraction and which can remain or need repair.

Your dentist and DK Dental Studio will be in communication with each other during this process.

Your dentist will conclude their work and book you in for an extraction.

ASAP you will need to book an appointment with DK Dental Studio to begin your immediate addition treatment. Note: We will need to take your denture during this process to add teeth to it. This means you will not have a denture during this time.

Depending on your case we will need 1-2 days to construct your immediate addition

On the day of your appointment with DK Dental Studio you will have your impressions taken, occlusion recorded and teeth selected to match your existing denture.

Your immediate addition will be ready on the day of your extraction booked in with your dentist. Before your appointment you must collect your immediate addition beforehand from DK Dental Studio, we recommend collecting 1 hr before your extraction appointment. Will we also book you for a follow appointment the next day (It's important to note, immediate denture can not be tried before the tooth extraction).

When you arrive at your dentist the first thing you must do is give them your immediate addition.

Once your dentist extracts your teeth they will issue your immediate addition which will stay in your mouth for the next 24 hrs acting as bandage from bleeding and brace from swelling. After 24 hrs the dentures can be removed washed and rinsed

Your next day appointment with DK Dental Studio will be a checkup, adjustment and the beginning of the next stage of the treatment.

1 week following your check up with DK Dental studio you will have a temporary filling of the shrunk areas of your immediate denture. Because as you heal your bone will shrink causing irritation from the lack of support. The temporary filling will ease your irritation or discomfort so you are still able to use your immediate addition.

This temporary filling will be done as many times needed leading up to your reline

After 2-3 months or longer has passed your bone and gum should have fully healed and shrunk. We will book you in for your appointment, at this stage we will reline your immediate addition. Similar to temporary filling, relining the denture is a more accurate and permanent solution. This process will take 1-2 days to complete and requires you to leave your dentures with DK Dental Studio.

After completion your relined dentures will be fitted and adjusted in the mouth which will conclude your treatment.

Note: If your immediate addition to existing denture is partial turning into a full immediate denture we recommend making a new denture instead of relining it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I bleach my dentures?

Do not attempt to use bleach on your dentures as it can permanently damage them, making them brittle and liable to breakage. Not just that, it can ruin their appearance making them look less natural. Avoid using very hot water as well, as this can distort their shape and you may need to have them relined.

Can I sleep in my dentures?

When your dentures are new, we would recommend you wear them to sleep in. This helps your gums to adapt. After a week or two, we suggest removing them at bedtime to allow your gums to be cleansed by the saliva on your tongue.

How long should your dentures last?

5-7 years on average if relined on time.

How long will my mouthguards last?

For adults, a well-maintained mouthguard will generally last 2-3years. We recommend washing it in cold water, storing it in its original packaging and away from direct sunlight.

Children's mouths are constantly changing as they lose teeth and new ones erupt. Ask your dentist to check the mouthguard at your child's regular dental check-up.

AFTERCARE

How to clean your denture?

To clean your denture, remove it from your mouth and rinse it under warm running water. Gently brush the denture with a soft-bristled denture brush and soap or non abrasive toothpaste, ensuring to clean all surfaces. Soak the denture overnight in a denture cleaning solution or water, rinse thoroughly before use, and clean your mouth, gums or natural teeth before reinserting the denture.

(Note: don't not put a dry denture in your mouth, make sure it is wet with water).

How to apply a denture adhesive agent?

To apply denture adhesive, clean your denture and dry it thoroughly. Apply the adhesive in thin strips or dots on the inside of the denture surface. Insert the denture into your mouth, pressing firmly and holding in place for 1 minute to ensure a secure fit.

(Note: if you apply too much you will taste it, that means put less next time).

How to treat blisters caused by dentures?

Take your denture out of your mouth. Make yourself a cup of warm water and salt (1 teaspoon is enough). Rinse your mouth with the warm water and salt till the cup is finished. Repeat this twice a day till your blister is gone. (Note: it is important to make sure your denture has been adjusted and fits properly, otherwise the blister will keep returning).

Your dentures can also be machine cleaned by DK Dental Studio. We recommend this every 6 months or if your dentures have significant build up or staining.
