Reline

Your dentures will get loose with time because as you age your gum shrinks, but your dentures stay the same. You may find it difficult to eat, speak and can be painful in some cases. To treat this we perform a reline to your dentures. A reline is where we fill up the lost space between your mouth and the denture with new denture material. This will provide support and retention restoring your dentures original function. Relines should typically be done every 2-3 years to maintain oral health.

If you don't reline your dentures on time, your dentures will break and ride the high spots of your mouth. These high spots are the sore or painful areas you experience when eating or talking. This can lead to rapid bone loss as your dentures will destroy the surrounding area. Long term this can cause scar tissue and areas where bone is lost but soft tissue is present. This will cause difficulties relining your dentures and may not have the needed retention or support. In the worst case the oral tissue will have to be removed by an oral surgeon.

Relining your dentures at DK Dental Studio

  • Book your appointment with DK Dental Studio for a consultation

  • On the day we will take your impressions inside of the denture and begin relining them. You will need to leave your denture with us during this process, it will take 1-2 days to complete. We will book you an appointment for collection and fitting

  • The following appointment your reline denture will be complete, fitted and adjusted.

Denture Repairs

A denture repair is needed when any damage or issues with dentures. This can include repairing cracks, replacing broken parts, adjusting the fit, or addressing other problems to restore the dentures' functionality and comfort for the wearer.

It is important to understand how it broke. If it was an accident like dropping the denture, a denture repair will be sufficient and effective. However, if the denture broke in the mouth while eating a reline may be needed to restore the support, otherwise it will continue to break.

  • Book an appointment with DK Dental Studio for a consultation and examination. Once we begin the repair we will have to keep your denture for the process. A typical repair will take 2 hours to complete.

  • Collect your denture either the same day (if booked in the first half of the day) or the following day.

Adjustments

You may need adjustments for your new dentures or new relined dentures to ensure they fit properly and comfortably in your mouth. Usually, during the first 3 weeks while wearing your dentures adjustments will be needed to ensure your dentures are functional and comfortable for everyday use.

Pre-existing dentures may also need an adjustment due to changes in the shape of your gums and jawbone over time. However, if your dentures are old an adjustment is a sign that you may need a reline to restore your denture function. (Note: make sure you have been wearing your dentures at least for 1 day before your adjustment so we can see where your sore spot is. Otherwise we won't be able to make correct adjustments).

  • Book an appointment with DK Dental Studio adjustments are made on the spot. However, if further intervention is needed such as a reline a consultation and examination will be required to begin treatment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I bleach my dentures?

Do not attempt to use bleach on your dentures as it can permanently damage them, making them brittle and liable to breakage. Not just that, it can ruin their appearance making them look less natural. Avoid using very hot water as well, as this can distort their shape and you may need to have them relined.

Can I sleep in my dentures?

When your dentures are new, we would recommend you wear them to sleep in. This helps your gums to adapt. After a week or two, we suggest removing them at bedtime to allow your gums to be cleansed by the saliva on your tongue.

How long should your dentures last?

5-7 years on average if relined on time.

How long will my mouthguards last?

For adults, a well-maintained mouthguard will generally last 2-3years. We recommend washing it in cold water, storing it in its original packaging and away from direct sunlight.

AFTERCARE

How to clean your denture?

To clean your denture, remove it from your mouth and rinse it under warm running water. Gently brush the denture with a soft-bristled denture brush and soap or non abrasive toothpaste, ensuring to clean all surfaces. Soak the denture overnight in a denture cleaning solution or water, rinse thoroughly before use, and clean your mouth, gums or natural teeth before reinserting the denture.

(Note: don't not put a dry denture in your mouth, make sure it is wet with water).

How to apply a denture adhesive agent?

To apply denture adhesive, clean your denture and dry it thoroughly. Apply the adhesive in thin strips or dots on the inside of the denture surface. Insert the denture into your mouth, pressing firmly and holding in place for 1 minute to ensure a secure fit.

(Note: if you apply too much you will taste it, that means put less next time).

How to treat blisters caused by dentures?

Take your denture out of your mouth. Make yourself a cup of warm water and salt (1 teaspoon is enough). Rinse your mouth with the warm water and salt till the cup is finished. Repeat this twice a day till your blister is gone. (Note: it is important to make sure your denture has been adjusted and fits properly, otherwise the blister will keep returning).

Your dentures can also be machine cleaned by DK Dental Studio. We recommend this every 6 months or if your dentures have significant build up or staining.
